Subject: Yes on 8 money must be investigated

Dear [Lawmaker]:

I am writing to express my outrage over the recent campaign that supported the passing of Proposition 8 in California. As I'm sure you know, the passing of Proposition 8 represented an incredible backslide in equal rights for Californians. The repeal of the basic civil right of marriage contracts for gay people represents a fundamental failure our system to defend our equal rights as citizens. I'm calling on you to work with the Internal Revenue Service to investigate the millions of dollars that fueled the campaign of hatred in support of Proposition 8. Specifically, it is critical that the Church of Latter Day Saints be investigated for their role in supporting political activities that helped funnel more than $20 million to the 'yes on proposition 8' campaign. The Mormon Church actively solicited political support and donations to pass proposition 8. This is clearly a violation of their tax exempt status as a church. Should any inquiry find misuse of their church resources to support this ugly initiative, I expect you to take full action to ensure their not-for-profit tax status is revoked. Thank you for your prompt attention and concern about this issue. I look forward to hearing back from you soon as to the progress of this investigation.
