What is Out-Raged?

In 1973 a fire raged inside a New Orleans gay bar killing thirty-two innocent patrons. It was a hate crime though hardly reported that way. In era when the word "homosexual," was too taboo to even be included in the phone book, it was not printed in any local coverage of the incident and only one national media source reported on it, not actually explaining what had happened. Gay rights activists across the country were not alerted and could not respond.

Today we live in time when information and news is fantastically more liberated. Not only are there more news sources than ever before, the Internet has allowed everyday citizens and activists to lend their voice as part of a new media. With all this news, however, comes a new responsibility, we must take action.

Out-Raged.org is a Web 2.0 grassroots community of concerned individuals who share news from across the web about the GLBT community and work together to combat the discrimination they see. The site is designed to provide users with a way to organize and combat obvious issues of discrimination, particularly in the private sphere, that might otherwise not see a public response.

Out-Raged.org was created to move the conversation around the GLBT civil rights movement and find a modern voice. It is an innovative platform that allows all individuals, no matter who or where they are in the world, to contribute to this new dialogue.

Out-Raged.org is the brainchild and work of Shane Mayer, a Consultant with Grassroots Enterprise who specializes in online campaigning and GLBT outreach.

How Does Out-Raged Work?

  • You can also share directly from many LGBT focused websites and blogs.
  • You can be part of the conversation by Shouting Out and speaking your mind.
  • Stay informed by keeping up with the Editor's blog and take action by sending a letter about issues affecting your community through the Speak Out.
